Delayed Obedience Is Disobedience

On a contract security site, most of what we publish is about operations: how a detail is built, how a perimeter is held, what happens overnight at an event. This one is about something that sits underneath all of that — the moment an officer reads a cue and has to decide, alone, whether to act.

EP Wired published Nic Moretto’s article “Delayed Obedience Is Disobedience” on July 6, 2026. The subtitle is “How Immediate Action Defines Leadership Authority in High-Stakes Environments,” and the piece lives up to it: it opens on a New Year’s Eve intervention at a beach resort that almost nobody in the room saw, and it builds from there into a question every security leader has to answer honestly about their own team.

The article names the gap at the center of it — the “Obedience Gap,” the distance between recognising the required action and executing it. In EP Wired’s own words:

The operator who sees the cue and acts immediately controls the outcome. The operator who waits — for more certainty, for permission, for the situation to become undeniable — forfeits that control.

That framing is deliberate, and it lands close to home for us. The officers we put on a client’s site are rarely working with a supervisor over their shoulder. They read situations and they act, or they hesitate and the moment passes. Which is why the article’s conclusion matters as much as its opening: closing the gap is not something an operator fixes alone. It is a leadership responsibility — set by how a team is trained, what is expected of it, and what a client is actually being sold when they hire a contract security company.

We run uniformed security officer services across Central Florida, and the standard in that article is the one we hire, train, and lead against. It is also, frankly, the harder thing to deliver than hardware or headcount, which is why so little of the industry talks about it.
