The Illusion of Protection: Why Executive Security Program Development Fails Before the Threat Arrives

We build security work for a living, and the hardest conversation in this business is the one that starts with “we already have security.” Often what an organization has is a post — a position, a person, a name on a schedule. A program is something else: a threat assessment that stays current, advance work treated as intelligence rather than logistics, standards that hold on the quiet days and not only on the bad ones. The difference matters most before anything goes wrong, because once something goes wrong there is no time left to build it.

That is the subject of our owner Nic Moretto’s article “The Illusion of Protection,” published August 5, 2026 in EP Wired, the executive protection magazine. It opens on a principal walking out of a hotel lobby with everything looking right and nothing behind it, and it names the structural failure points that create vulnerability before any threat actor picks a target — then sets a standard for each. As the article puts it, in EP Wired’s pages:

Having security personnel is not the same as having a security program. One fills a post. The other fills a gap before it becomes a crisis.

That line is the argument in one breath, and it is the distinction we hold our own work to. When we design executive protection for principals in Central Florida, presence is the last thing we add, not the first — it sits on top of assessment, planning, and standards, or it is decoration. A program starts with knowing what the threat actually is, which is the discipline behind our RVTA risk assessments: the assessment comes first, and everything else — staffing, routes, schedules, contingencies — builds on it.
