Security officers in
Viera,
Florida.
Viera is the master-planned community astride I-95 in central Brevard, home to the county government centre, and about twelve miles from our Merritt Island office. We staff gate posts and patrol for its gated neighbourhoods, overnight construction coverage for the subdivisions still going in west of the interstate, and details for the sports complex and the outdoor mall.

What Viera asks of a post
Airspace. Viera has no towered field near it. Melbourne's controlled airspace starts south of Suntree, Patrick's stays on the barrier island, and Merritt Island Airport is non-towered, so the community is uncontrolled below 400 feet from end to end. That makes it one of the easiest places in the county to fly a construction progress set or a perimeter sweep. The constraint is Florida's drone privacy statute, and in a gated neighbourhood the neighbours are the constraint.
Storm season. Viera is inland, flat and new, so its storm exposure is wind, rain and drainage rather than surge. The retention lakes and the wetlands to the west are designed to take the water, and in a long rain event they do, up to a point. Outages run long on new subdivisions at the end of the grid, and a gate that loses power is a gate that stays open, which is the reason gated communities here ask for a ride-out post.
The corridor. I-95 splits the community into Viera East and Viera West, with the Wickham Road and Fiske Boulevard exits as the two ways in, and Stadium Parkway and Murrell Road as the local spines. The county government centre, the hospital and the outdoor mall sit near the interstate; the residential neighbourhoods run out from there behind their gates. West of I-95 the land is still being built, and a construction post there is on a parcel with houses going up on one side and cattle pasture on the other.
The build-out. Viera is the fastest-growing part of the county, and much of what we are asked to cover here does not exist yet: model rows, lay-down yards, half-built streets and the equipment left on them overnight. A construction post in Viera runs from the gate the developer put in, with an access list that changes as trades rotate, and it turns into a gate post when the neighbourhood opens. Both are staffed from the same roster.
Viera questions
Before you call
Are you actually based in Viera?
No. Our office is on Merritt Island at 137 S Courtenay Pkwy, about twelve miles north-east. Viera posts are scheduled from that roster, and the drive is US-1 or I-95 depending on the side of the interstate.
How fast can you put an officer on a Viera property?
Standard lead time is 72 hours for a scheduled post. Same-day callout is often possible for one to three officers but depends on the live roster, which is why it is confirmed by phone rather than through a form.
Can you cover a community that is still under construction?
Yes, and it is the most common request we get in Viera. The post starts as construction coverage under the developer's access list and becomes a gate post under the association's when the neighbourhood opens; the officers, the reports and the point of contact carry over.
Can you fly drones over a Viera property?
Yes, as far as the airspace goes: there is no tower over Viera, so parcels need no LAANC authorization. Florida's drone privacy statute governs what can be imaged of neighbouring homes, which in a gated community is the first thing the association asks about, and the owner's consent is recorded in the flight log.
